Learning to Care / Learning Not to Care

Learning to Care / Learning Not to Care is a synchronized, two-channel video installation that places the audience between a gunman and his target. The videos, which are projected on opposite walls, document a hunter practicing his aim by shooting the acupuncture points of a human-silhouette target, escalating from a .22 rifle, to a high-power rifle, and finally to a shotgun. The medicinal and military elements counterpoint traditional healing with desensitization to violence, where the gunman unwittingly learns acupuncture while practicing to kill, alluding to both the use and threat of violence in ‘caring for’ and controlling society.
