Project 1 - Blind Contour Drawing of Duchamp’s Fountain
After experiencing a replica of “the most important artwork of the past century” - Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain (1914) - the students will create “blind” contour drawings by taping white string onto black paper. This exercise explores the use of line and form in creating a two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional object, peaking interest and generating questions about the nature and importance of Conceptual Art.
In Mexico City, the physical contact with the urinal helped to emphasize the offensive and/or repulsive intentions Duchamp...

Being led to the Fountain replica.

Hands-on experience of the Fountain.

"Wait a second..."

"...I know what that is!"

The humour of Duchamp quickly became obvious, too.

Students prepare to make a "blind contour" drawing.
