for the Visually Impaired


Project 8 - Following Piece


Based on the performance Following Piece (1969), by Vito Acconci, and the series After Walker Evans (1980), by Sherrie Levine, we will discuss the idea and act of following strangers in public while making observations, and the idea of appropriating an existing artwork to create a new artwork. We will explore the connections between the idea of following and the idea of influence, and students will be asked to modify Acconci’s performance and/or Levine’s example of artistic appropriation to suit their own artistic purposes.



In Mexico City, the Conceptual Art Workshop for the Visually Impaired coincided by chance with a lecture given by Vito Acconci. While his lecture focused on his recent architectural work, he did speak of his early performances. In anticipation of his visit, my students decided to create various possible itineraries for Vito Acconci for his stay in Mexico City. We presented him with these new possible itineraries after his lecture...
